Massimo & Helen Barcellona are the founders and Directors of SHP Health. They both qualified as Physiotherapists and got married in 2002. Since then their working lives have been woven in and around their family life in Dorking and their work paths have converged at different points as they have pursued their individual careers within the profession. Massimo has continued to be involved in academia, firstly, at the university of King’s College London to gain his PhD in the area of rehabilitation for knee ligament injury and then continuing in an academic role in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Since 2012 Massimo has worked as a Consultant Physiotherapist in Musculoskeletal at King’s College Hospital. Alongside this, his local reputation has grown by word of mouth and he has committed more and more hours to his local clinic.

Helen worked in the NHS and since 2010, to work more easily around their 3 children, she has pursued her love of Pilates, that started with her University dissertation on this form of exercise. Completing her fully accredited instructor training with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI) she has evolved her own style of teaching over the last 10 years.

In line with their commitment to best available evidence-based practice, Helen has been able to collaborate with and draw upon Massimo’s research in musculoskeletal and understanding and love of teaching in this area. This has enabled her to design the classes to incorporate many of the elements that are so helpful for improving both people’s musculoskeletal wellbeing and their enjoyment of exercise. Massimo and Helen’s love of working with people has driven them to be involved and embedded within their local community, not only through their work but through different voluntary work and involvement in local groups.

They have a big family network locally and are increasingly involved in their children’s local sporting activities as well as their own. In expanding the team at SHP, Helen and Massimo have drawn upon a close network of friends and contacts within their professional working lives. Since setting up SHP they have invested time and effort in running a professional network and their love of what they do has helped to grow the team.

SHP Health and the Surrey Hills

Our working and family life are embedded in the Surrey Hills. We feel privileged to be a part of such a beautiful and thriving community.

As a business, our central concept is the promotion of health and wellbeing. What better place to do that than in the Surrey Hills! Our awareness of this has led to design “The Barn” in keeping with its location within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The barn conversion started in September 2019. Dating back to 1750, many measures have been implemented to restore and maintain the original fixtures and features of The Barn.

Any additional materials used to complete the build have been natural products; stone, ceramic, and wood; seeking inspiration from the beautiful original beams. With a commitment to sustainability and green practices, SHP have sought to make the barn as energy efficient as possible and a vast amount of care and attention has gone into the planning to ensure that the space is insulated to the highest levels.

The studio has a sprung wood floor with efficient underfloor heating and LED lighting. We are committed to serving our local community by providing health & wellbeing services, education and patient-centred care. Informed by best available evidence we aim to empower the individual. We provide classes to foster community and people’s health and wellbeing; helping people to remain active and to keep doing the things that they enjoy.
