Virtual Reality (VR) Headsets

A Surrey CC/Interreg Green Social Prescribing project has piloted the use of 360-degree virtual reality technology to bring nature to people virtually.  A previously funded virtual reality pilot project had already aimed to understand the feasibility of using VR headsets to improve wellbeing and nature connectedness amongst key groups experiencing health inequality.  The target groups comprised of people with dementia, people with a disability, unpaid carers, and health care professionals.  The previous pilot project demonstrated that it is practicable to provide virtual access to Surrey’s green and blue spaces, particularly for groups who may be at a point in their lives where they are unable to physically access those same places. It has been found that virtual access to nature can serve as a ‘steppingstone’ to encourage and promote actual access to nature, i.e. where anxiety is a barrier.  Furthermore, early indications suggest that these virtual experiences have a positive impact on feelings of wellbeing and nature connectedness, as well as a range of other benefits, such as for sleep or stress relief.

The Access Fund provided the cost of purchasing 11 new headsets to complement the 6 already in use.
