fipl river bank protection

River Wey bank protection Sugar Baker House

The landowner applied for £5,534.82 to fence off a section of the bank of the River Wey in the water meadows.  This followed a Surrey Wildlife Trust ecological survey recommendation that benefits to water quality and habitat conservation could be achieved by fencing to prevent cattle from direct access to the river.  This would reduce the trampling and poaching of the riverbank and so reduce the amount of silt from entering the water and limit further erosion.  Fencing off the riverbank and leaving a 6-12m buffer strip between the fence and the river will allow for natural regeneration, strengthening and protecting the river banks and increasing biodiversity and habitats.
