Pond Restoration Lydling Farm

Pond Restoration Lydling Farm

Lydling farm applied for £12,936.00 to restore a historic pond on the farmland following a pond survey carried out by FWAG (Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group). The three main goals of the project were to

  1. Reestablish a mix of riparian habitats and increase the amount of sunlight reaching the pond.
  2. Prevent further successional pressures that could lead to a total loss of open water habitats.
  3. Improve water quality by reducing pollutants entering the pond and increasing flow between the ponds two main areas.

Water samples were collected before the project began to establish a baseline for comparison with samples taken after the restoration was completed.

As part of the project, a comprehensive programme of tree trimming, pollarding, and selective removals was carried out to create a diverse landscape of open and densely wooded areas around the pond and on the islands. This also allowed more sunlight to reach the pond and the surrounding woodland, benefiting the ecosystem.

The restoration will make ongoing maintenance more manageable, requiring smaller and more frequent interventions. Additionally, the installation of a silt trap will help extend the time before the pond requires dredging again, ensuring its long-term health and functionality.
