Leith Hill Place Improvements National Trust

Leith Hill Place is famous for its commanding views across the Surrey Hills, and for being the childhood home of British composer Vaughan Williams.

Following an access audit from Surrey Coalition of Disabled People organised by the National Landscape, the 17th-century property was awarded a grant for a number of improvements.

Previously the views from garden at the rear of the house were out of bounds for those with limited mobility. Thanks the Access Fund, wheelchair users can now reach the garden using the accessible route which skirts the house itself.

Additionally, the fund has supported work to level and resurface the “apron” in front of the house, creating disabled carparking and ensuring those with limited mobility can move from their vehicle to mobility device, and then new tracks.

People/Place: To resurface the ‘apron’ at the front of the house to flatten out the ground and smooth it out for safer and better access out of car, particularly for wheelchair users transitioning from car to chair. (orange area.)
