Nature Calling Surrey Hills Arts
To promote the message that the Surrey Hills National Landscape welcomes all, Surrey Hills Arts are actively engaging with the landscape’s neighbouring urban areas.
Through the Nature Calling project, Surrey Hills Arts encourages people to use their local natural spots as well as journeying into the Surrey Hills.
The Access Fund grant has allowed Surrey Hills Arts to make improvements to Hutchinson’s Bank, a nature reserve in New Addington, Croydon. Through the fund, new posts and a hand-rail assisting people up a long flight of steps at this steep bank were installed. The fund has also enabled the installation of a welcome sign at the entrance to the site. Previously, the entrance was hidden next to a council waste facility, now it is clearly seen with a bright welcoming sign inspired by the illustrations created in local community art workshops.
Surrey Hills Arts has also replaced rotten oak posts and installed new ones at Box Hill which feature colourful printed plaques to guide visitors around the site, on a new interactive game trail.
This project is part of a national art programme coordinated by the Association for National Landscapes funded by Arts Council England and Defra.
