Tanhurst Estate Vineyard
Tanhurst Estate Vineyard comprises a winery, café barn, and a beautiful series of vine fields on the lower slopes of Leith Hill, the highest point in the South East of England and a central part of the Surrey Hills National Landscape. It is part of a larger farming and woodland estate which was established in 1826 and which is now run as a family business welcoming visitors to its vineyard to explore, try, and buy its fine English wines, visit the café, or to stay at its high quality holiday cottages and converted barns.

Wine
Tanhurst Estate Vineyard is a family-run business in the beautiful Surrey Hills National Landscape, one of the oldest landscape designations in England. As the vineyard includes its very own winery, all the fine English wines Tanhurst produce are expertly cared for, developed, blended, and bottled on the site at Birketts Farm, where there are around 15 acres of vines growing. The first vines were planted in 2020 and since then, the vision has remained – to produce the highest quality English still and sparkling wines while providing a personal service.
Tanhurst Estate has a rich history that began in 1826, though more recently Colin and Sarah came to live at Tanhurst to take over the mantle from Sarah’s father. With external advice, and a passion for being able to trade on site in the growing industry of English Wine, the decision was made to become a vineyard and winery on the land that was most suitable.
Tanhurst Estate and its surroundings are a beautiful place to visit and explore. The surrounding countryside is a haven for wildlife, and public rights of way and wooded commons spread across thousands of acres of land adjoining or a short distance from Tanhurst, such as across Wotton and Abinger Commons, the Hurtwood, and White Down.
Tanhurst are also one of the Vineyards of the Surrey Hills which have helped put Surrey’s spectacular wines on the map, and Tanhurst wish to be able to blend and produce all varieties of wine (including red and sparkling in due course). As an essential part of this they have chosen to plant Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Cortis, and Pinot Noir Precoce, and are advised by an experienced Italian winemaker.
Café
Birketts Farm is located on the quiet Tanhurst Lane, and as people come from miles around for their recreation around Leith Hill, Tanhurst chose to offer a space for them to sit in the sun with a glass of wine or a hot drink, partway through a bike ride, hike, or dog walk. As such, there are such amenities as WCs, bike racks, and an EV charger.
