Birtley Estates Management

The historic Birtley Estate with its ancient woodlands, fly fishing lake, parkland, beautiful gardens and a 700 tree cider apple orchard from which our award-winning BEORC LEAH, Calvados style brandy is produced,ย  is nestled within the stunning scenery of the Surrey Hills National Landscape.

A haven for nature, wellness, community, heritage, enrichment and outdoor pursuits, The Birtley Estate is proud home to an array of events, activities and workshops hosted by our partners who operate from the grounds. We work with a number of local partners presenting a range of courses and activities from willow weaving to stone carving workshops, bushcraft activities, nature trails, forest bathing, wild seasonal foraging, bee -keeping courses and mindfulness activities run by our partners Hedges and Hurdles in the Birtley Woodland Art Space, Simon Keeley Stone Carver, Guildford Beekeepers Association, Joyful Outdoors, Harmony in Nature, Vikings Survival & Outdoor Skills.

Our woodlands are provide a base for Roar Trails, alternative education providers and The Surrey Hills Forest School, where children thrive and develop their skills in a natural outdoor environment through the school year and with holiday camps that are extremely popular.

We have a long standing relationship with halow Project, a Guildford based charity for young people with learning disabilities and autism; we enjoy supporting their work in our Kitchen Garden.ย  When halow come for work experience they help us enrich our environment by engaging in our woodland activities, exploring the Birtley surroundings, getting involved in nature conservation projects and learning practical countryside management skills.

Within the 48 acres of grounds of the Birtley Estate sits a cider apple orchard of 700 trees.ย  The apple orchard was planted in 2012 and is managed with environmental care.ย  We grow six varieties of cider apples which are pollinated by the honey bees from the Apiary run by Guildford Beekeepers on site and used to produce a small-batch, premium apple brandy, in the style of Calvados.
The brandy is namedย “BEORC LEAH”, the old English name for Birtley, meaning “clearing in the birch woods” and the location of our orchard.ย  Birtley House and the Birtley Estate haveย records that go back in history to the 12th century and BEORC LEAHย with it’s beautiful bottle, smooth taste and lasting after tones reflectsย its rich heritage.
We are proud that BEORC LEAH won a silver medal in the 2023ย Londonย Sprits Competition and bronze at the International Wine andย Spiritsย Competition 2025.
Birtley’s award-winning, limited-edition apple brandy retails at ยฃ60 per bottle and is available to purchase atย www.birtleyestate.co.uk
