Escape to the peaceful woodlands of Epping Forest on this circular walk, blending ancient history, open forest views, and the chance to spot deer.
Starting from the tranquil village of Theydon Bois, right on the edge of Epping Forest, this circular walk follows part of the Oak Trail through beautiful woodland and open forest clearings. Theydon Bois feels wonderfully peaceful — and there are welcoming pubs near the station for a post-hike refuel. The route loops through Bell Common and Birch Wood, passing stretches of airy open woodland, the striking Dead Oak Tree viewpoint, and the ancient earthworks of Ambresbury Banks, an Iron Age hillfort steeped in legend. We’ll also pass the Deer Sanctuary, home to fallow deer and part of the forest’s long conservation history.
A moderately challenging woodland escape rich in history, wildlife and natural beauty.
