Boardwalk Restoration Frensham Great Pond
Frensham Great Pond as a Green Flag award winning site is rightly popular with the public.
Frensham Great Pond as a Green Flag award winning site is rightly popular with the public. As a location it allows visitors literally to immerse themselves in nature through its designated swimming spot, as well as being an ideal location for walks.
One of its special characteristics presents a large barrier to visitors with limited mobility: it’s thick sand.
For many years Frensham Great Pond’s board walk which allowed visitors to head straight into the heart of the sandy beach without being bogged down has languished in a state of ill-repair. It’s lack was identified in a accessibility audit by the Surrey Coalition of Disabled People.
Following funding from the Access Fund, the old boardwalk has been replaced, and the beach is now more accessible for more people for many more years to come.
Speaking after its completion in March 2025, Darren Hill, Countryside Ranger for Frensham Great Pond commented,
“The replacement boardwalk at Frensham will make a massive improvement to accessibility- a recent visit from the Surrey Coalition of Disabled People showed us just how difficult access can be to the honey pot area of the site. We are in the run up to the warmer months now and I really hope the improved access will allow those with limited mobility, and their friends and family, to be able to fully experience the beautiful environment here at the Great Pond.”
