Queen Elizabeth’s Wood walk Hampton Estate

On the southern slopes of the Hogs Back, bordering the A31, are a collection of fields owned and managed by Hampton Estate. These fields are a mosaic of priority chalk downland and wood pasture habitats. Hampton has begun a new programme of ecological restoration across these fields. This involves planting a new mixed native woodland and restoring the chalk downland. Across these habitat restoration/creation projects, we have also created a new footpath to a viewpoint over the North Downs. The total length of the trail (out and back) is approximately 2km.

The Access Fund paid for the design and installation of new signage for the walk including a welcome board, way markers and information signs as well as new benches to take in the view.  In addition, a new web page has been created to tell people about the walk and the wider work at this location

Visitor feedback:

“I have just discovered the Elizabeth Wood Walk. Love, love, love it. Stunning views on a stunning evening. The new great big benches are fab. Will look forward to seeing how it all grows over the next few years. Thanks for looking after this amazing area.”

“I just wanted to thank you and the team for the work you have done in the Downlands area. I took a lovely slow walk up there this morning and it’s beautiful.  The top field is particularly stunning. The larks were singing, there were common blue butterflies flying about and so many flowers. “
