Easier Access at Box Hill

The National Trust’s site at Box Hill is one of the most recognised and loved destinations in the Surrey Hills.  Famous for its spectacular views and Zig Zag hill climb, it is also a sensitive site, important for its chalk downland, ancient Yew and Box woodland, and a wide host of rare plants and wildlife.  Popular with families and a wide range of visitors, the National Trust are working to ensure that the welcome encompasses everyone.  Another access review with the Surrey Coalition of Disabled People resulted in a programme of works to upgrade the provision of accessible greenspace and associated facilities, including:

  • An extension to the surfaced, all access path around the current play trail which now allows wheelchair users and buggies to complete the two-mile trail without having to retrace their route
  • Replacement of three play trail features with more accessible features for all users (funded separately by the Surrey Hills National Landscape – £15,000 – work completed 20 May 2023)
  • Improving the disabled toilet with a new push button mechanised door.
  • Improving access at the café by the building of a new doorway with a fully mechanised door and enlarged gateway.
  • New accessible picnic tables and seats outside the café.
  • A storage facility for our mountain trike- which is used every day.
  • Hearing loops for visitor reception and food and drink areas
