Autumn Tree Wisdom Walk: Celtic & Japanese Traditions
21 October 2026 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Discover the wisdom of trees on a gentle autumn walk exploring British and Japanese traditions, folklore, foraging, seasonal flavours and mindful reflection.
AUTUMN
Join us for a unique 3-hour Autumn Tree Wisdom Walk, where British and Japanese tree traditions meet beneath the colourful autumn canopy. As the woodland transforms with golden leaves and crisp air, we’ll follow a gentle riverside route of less than one mile, slowing down to observe the remarkable trees that surround us.
This special collaboration is led by Paul Ritchie—biologist, artist, and passionate tree expert—and Lisa, who shares her Japanese heritage through seasonal traditions, mindful practices, and the cultural relationship between people and trees. Together, we’ll explore how two ancient cultures have found wisdom, beauty, and meaning in the woodland.
KNOWLEDGE
As we meet each of Britain’s native trees, Paul will teach you how to identify them through their leaves, bark, buds, seeds, and seasonal characteristics. He’ll bring each species to life through its ecology, Celtic folklore, the Ogham alphabet, and the Celtic Tree Calendar, revealing the stories and symbolism that have shaped our relationship with trees for centuries.
Alongside each tree, Lisa will introduce its Japanese equivalent, sharing how similar species are celebrated in Japanese folklore, seasonal customs, language, and culture. She’ll also explore the edible and medicinal gifts each tree offers, introducing traditional and modern foraging uses, along with ways these seasonal ingredients can be enjoyed and appreciated.
WISDOM
Together we’ll discover how both Celtic and Japanese traditions have regarded trees as teachers, healers, protectors, and companions. As autumn reminds us of nature’s constant cycle of change, we’ll reflect on the quiet wisdom that trees continue to offer those who pause to observe them.
CONTEMPLATION
Our walk will include a peaceful moment of creative reflection using water brushes on magical disappearing paper. Guided by Lisa, you’ll explore the meditative practice of writing the Japanese kanji for some of the trees we’ve encountered, while Paul introduces their corresponding Ogham symbols. As the water slowly evaporates, the experience becomes a gentle reminder of autumn’s lessons in impermanence, presence, and renewal.
TASTE
We’ll conclude by sharing warming seasonal refreshments inspired by the woodland, celebrating the flavours and stories of the season through thoughtfully prepared treats featuring carefully foraged ingredients.
