Dark Skies at Newlands Corner

Join us for a magical evening under the stars at Newlands Corner in the Surrey Hills National Landscape as we celebrate the wonder, beauty and importance of dark skies.

Organised by Surrey Hills Arts in partnership with Guildford Astronomical Society and Lockwood Studios, this special event will bring together astronomy, conservation, creativity and wellbeing in a unique programme designed to inspire all ages.

Look through telescopes with expert astronomers from Guildford Astronomical Society and discover the night sky above the Surrey Hills. Enjoy fascinating conservation talks exploring the importance of dark skies for wildlife and people, and experience poetry by Briony Hughes, inspired by bats and the natural world.

Immerse yourself in Moth x Human, an evocative sonic journey created by artist Ellie Wilson using moth data and take part in peaceful, guided torch-free walks with The Forest Bathing Institute through the woodland to the ancient yew trees as darkness falls.

With hot drinks, delicious cakes and opportunities to connect with nature, creativity and your local community, this promises to be a memorable autumn evening in one of Surrey’s most beautiful landscapes.

Attendance is free, although donations to the Surrey Hills Nature Fund (administered by Surrey Hills Society – Registered Charity No. 1125532) are welcome. To help organisers plan attendance, visitors are asked to register in advance.

Begin your evening with a guided torch-free wellbeing walk through the woodland before the main event starts. Experience the sights, sounds and atmosphere of our protected landscape at dusk and discover why protecting our dark skies matters.  Can’t come before the event?  Choose one of our later wellbeing walk slots.  Places on the walk are limited and must be reserved in advance.
