Cut and Collect Flail Mower Surrey County Council
SCC has applied for £10,422.00 to purchase a cut-and-collect flail mower to support conservation management across multiple chalk grassland sites. This specialised equipment will enable the effective removal of grass and scrub species, preventing the accumulation of nutrients in the soil. Maintaining low nutrient levels is essential for chalk grassland habitats, as it reduces competition and allows a wider range of characteristic species to flourish.
The flail mower, when used in conjunction with a tractor, will allow conservation teams to manage much larger areas than would be possible through volunteer labour alone. This increased efficiency will ensure consistent, large-scale habitat maintenance across the sites.
Many of the areas where the equipment will be used are accessible to the public, providing opportunities for visitors to explore and learn about the unique species and habitats found within these valuable chalk grassland landscapes. The project not only supports biodiversity but also enhances the educational and recreational value of these publicly accessible sites.
