Mob Grazing Bale Unroller Castle Hill Farmers

Castle Hill Farm applied for £1,204.00 to purchase a bale unroller to enhance their mob grazing system. This decision was inspired by ideas gained during a Pasture for Life Association farm tour, where the benefits of using a bale unroller for herd health, field productivity, and soil health were demonstrated.

The primary goals of the project include:

  • Minimising soil compaction – Preserving the soil’s structure and integrity to promote healthy growth.
  • Enhancing soil fertility – Daily cattle movement minimises ground trampling and ensures even nutrient distribution across the field, encouraging grass growth and improving soil health.
  • Reducing diesel usage – By allowing cattle to winter outdoors, unrolling bales directly in fields eliminates the need for additional machinery, cutting fuel consumption.

The anticipated outcomes of the project are:

  • Extended periods for cattle to remain outdoors during winter.
  • Healthier and more productive livestock.
  • Improved soil and field conditions.
  • Increased wildlife and biodiversity.
  • Reduced input costs and overall expenses.
  • A reduction in monoculture, promoting diverse ecosystems in fields.
