Meet Surrey Hills artist, Ruth Wheeler. Ruth runs art and yoga classes, creative workshops and retreats in the Surrey Hills and creates artworks and wood sculptures from her studio in Witley. She takes inspiration from the natural world, finding a particular affinity with the trees that she discovers on her walks.
“I couldn’t live anywhere without having the trees around me. The Surrey Hills has influenced me throughout the whole of my creative life. My work has been inspired through living and breathing the Surrey Hills landscape, I go on lots of walks. I’m inspired by the trees, particularly the birch trees, so I might go through phases of being inspired by the ferns, the bracken or the spring flowers, but I always go back to the trees. Always. I encourage anyone to step out of their door and take a walk wherever they live. You feel better from being outside, walking in nature, being in nature. Even if you can’t get out very far, just finding somewhere to sit with a cup of coffee, or dancing or yoga or just walking and exploring the countryside, seeing these beautiful things, they all make you feel amazing.”
