First Surrey Hills Champions’ Tree Planting Day Supports and Celebrates Surrey Hills Sustainability

The first Surrey Hills Champions’ Tree Planting Day, held on Sunday 21st November at Clandon Wood Nature Reserve in West Clandon, kick-started the planting of many new trees and hedgerows within the Surrey Hills, supported by the community themselves.

The event, the first of its kind, was held as a celebration of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and of those local people who have pledged their support for a sustainable future for the region by signing up to become a Surrey Hills Champion.

The Surrey Hills Champions initiative was launched by Surrey Hills Enterprises in June this year as part of their work as a Community Interest Company that promotes, protects and enhances the Surrey Hills AONB, as a way for residents of the Surrey Hills to take a more active role in the protection, support and care for their environment and community. Part of the Surrey Hills Champions’ annual £25 subscription contributes to the planting of trees in the Surrey Hills, as well as giving them access to special offers

The Champions’ Tree Planting Day, sponsored by Squires Garden Centres and EnterpriseM3, was the first special event held for Surrey Hills Champions, attended by 50 Champions, alongside Surrey Hills Enterprises’ Corporate Partners Charles Russell Speechlys, Azets, Citywide Financial and Lexus Guildford.

Back Row (L-R): Sara Gillett, Lexus Guildford; Wendy Varcoe, Surrey Hills Enterprises; Sally Ashford, Charles Russell Speechlys; Gordon Jackson, Surrey Hills Society; Clinton Askew, Citywide Financial. Front Row (L-R): Sarah Squire, Squires Garden Centres – sponsor of the Surrey Hills Champions; Christa Emmett, Surrey Hills Society.

Starting the day with a welcome glass of Surrey Hills’ wine from Greyfriars Vineyard or beer from Binary Botanical in the stunning Glass Pavilion of Clandon Wood, Champions were treated to a delicious Surrey Hills lunch, prepared with produce from Hill House Farm, Dorking – all local businesses awarded the Surrey Hills Trademark, a mark of local quality, provenance and sustainability.

Following the lunch, the group then took the short walk to the tree planting site within the nature reserve, where Champions were guided to play their part in planting a new 50-metre long native hedgerow, the ideal habitat in which to support local wildlife and encourage nature recovery. Taking a shovel, Surrey Hills Champions were presented with a sapling to plant in the pre-prepared soil, aided by Surrey Hills Enterprises’ planting partners, the Surrey Hills Society, represented on the day by Gordon Jackson and Christa Emmett.

Commenting on the tree planting, Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres, said:

“We are so pleased to be a part of this fantastic initiative which supports and encourages nature recovery in the Surrey Hills. We all know how important hedgerows are to birds, insects, hedgehogs small mammals and a host of other living creatures as well as the carbon capture, a function they share with all plants. I would like to applaud Surrey Hills Enterprises and the Surrey Hills Society on this initiative, not just because planting hedges is a good thing to do, but also in the way they bring businesses, individuals and groups together.”

Once 300 saplings were successfully planted, the session concluded with a warming cup of tea or coffee and Surrey Hills’ cake from The Cookie Bar back in the beautiful Pavilion. Here, there was also the chance to meet some of the Surrey Hills’ most sustainable businesses in person and learn more about building a business successfully and sustainability within the Surrey Hills, particularly timely in light of the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).

Following the Tree Planting Day, Wendy Varcoe MBE, Executive Director of Surrey Hills Enterprises, commented:

“It was wonderful and inspiring to see the Surrey Hills Champions gather for the very first tree planting event this weekend. With so many members of the community rolling up their sleeves and getting involved, pledging their support for the local area, we look forward to the event being the first of many, paving the way for a more sustainable future for the Surrey Hills.”

Surrey Hills Sustainable Business Conference Shines a Spotlight on a Greener Future for Surrey

The Surrey Hills Sustainable Business Conference, held on Friday 22 October at Pennyhill Park Hotel & Spa, sparked important discussion and debate around how businesses in Surrey can contribute to a more sustainable outlook for the county.

With a theme of ‘Zeroing in on a Sustainable Future’, the significant and timely conference was organised by Surrey Hills Enterprises – the Community Interest Company that works with local businesses to support the rural economy and promote, protect and enhance the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) – and hosted by Pennyhill Park Hotel & Spa, the 5-star luxury Bagshot hotel and destination spa.

The prestigious hotel provided the ideal backdrop to proceedings, with a full and varied programme of presentations from informative speakers to inspire and engage the audience to recover, grow and thrive in a more sustainable way, accompanied by refreshments throughout the day from local Surrey Hills’ producers and businesses.

Sustainable Business Conference
Michael More-Molyneux, the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey and Patron of Surrey Hills Enterprises, formally opened the pivotal conference, and those attending were then welcomed by Chairman of Surrey Hills Enterprises, Simon Whalley, who later commented:

“With the Surrey Hills Sustainable Business Conference, it was important for us to showcase solutions from forward-thinking businesses, providing real life examples of initiatives that achieve both business success and deliver on sustainability goals. This pivotal conference has not only demonstrated that it is not either/or, but that the key to future business success will be to harness a greener approach and use it to pave a more sustainable future for both the business itself and Surrey as a whole.”

Sustainable Business Conference
Speakers for the morning session of the conference included Andrew Griffiths, Chair of IoD National Sustainability Taskforce and Director of Community & Partnerships at PlanetMark who made the practical business case for sustainability and Danny Pecorelli, Managing Director of the Exclusive Collection, of which Pennyhill Park is a part, about the Pennyhill Park experience of using local produce in their restaurants and the importance of the Circular Economy.

Sustainable Business Conference
Following the first session, there was a chance for attendees to visit the exhibitors’ stands, which showcased sustainable business practices, to obtain inspiration for their own future sustainability steps and to network.

The second half of the morning session featured four exemplar speakers: Adam Dobson, Global Sales Director of Silent Pool Distillers who spoke about launching a sustainable product internationally; Mark Lebus, Founder of LC Energy Ltd addressing the room on the Roadmap to Net Zero; 6th-generation farmer, Angus Stovold from Lydling Farm, talking on Surrey Hills Landscape Restoration and farmers collaborating to deliver natural capital investment across the Surrey Hills; and Ian Jones from Hill House Farm about Sustainable Food Production.

Morgan Arnell, Crumbs Brewing

A break for lunch was held in the hotel’s Hillfield Restaurant, where attendees sampled sustainable local produce from within the Surrey Hills provided by Surrey Hills Enterprises’ members, including beef from Provenance Cuts, pork from Hill House Farm, micro greens from Eden Greens, bread from Chalk Hills Bakery, ice cream from Moooh Ice Cream and ‘Noor’ white wine from Greyfriars Vineyard.

The afternoon session featured key industry speakers, including Carol Miller encouraging businesses to enter the Crest 22 Business Awards, Surrey’s sustainable business awards, run to celebrate excellence in sustainability within the county; and Jennie Pell, Clean Growth Sector Specialist at Enterprise M3, and Carolyn McKenzie, Director for Environment at Surrey County Council, speaking about the funding available to Surrey businesses for sustainable practices. The conference closed with reflections and key actions by Peter Martin, Board Director at Surrey Hills Enterprises and thoughts from Helyn Clack, Chairman of Surrey County Council.

Danielle Bekker, Binary Botanical

During interactive Q&A sessions at the end of each section of the conference, the speakers encouraged excellent questions from within the audience, generating important discussions around key topics. At the close, attendees were able to take away valuable tips and ideas to grow their own businesses in a more sustainable fashion and useful new contacts within the Surrey Hills business community. The Surrey Hills Sustainable Business Conference 2021 inspired and engaged the local business attendees and sparked wider consideration and debate around key topics on how to grow greener – something that was proved to be essential, not just for a more sustainable future but also for future business success.

Positive steps forward for Surrey Hills “Farm to fork” business

One of the positives to have come out of the pandemic has been the innovation and diversification that many businesses have undergone. Faced with incredible challenges, many Surrey Hills businesses have looked for new opportunities and new avenues to help them grow. In turn, this has led to creating new jobs, increasing awareness of local produce, and maintaining high standards of quality, sustainability and  local provenance.

One such example is Hill House Farm – Awarded the 2020 Gold Trade Mark Surrey Hills.

After 25 years as a hotelier, Ian Jones set up Hill House Farm, with his family in 2018, rearing Gloucester Old Spots Pork and Southdown Lamb using regenerative and natural farming methods.

By the end of 2019, they had a successful wholesale pork and lamb business as well as a growing and thriving catering and events business using their own produce.

2020 was set to be the year they made their first profit  – with a stretching yet achievable budget they embarked on 2020 full of enthusiasm and excitement.

Enter COVID 19

By 23rd March 2020 they had lost 95% of their income as lockdown gripped the nation.

Not one to be beaten, they reinvented their business, developing an online store and creating a home delivery service for their pork and lamb.  It has since grown beyond their expectations, they now work with a collection of local growers, farmers, producers and winemakers in Surrey and Sussex to provide over 300 carefully sourced items to around 2300 homes nationwide.

Hill House Farm to open butchers shop at Chessington Garden Centre

As if that was not enough, they have just announced that they will be opening their first butcher’s shop at Chessington Garden Centre, as part of the Centre’s farm shop expansion.

The Farm’s state of the art butchery will be an integral part of the Centre’s new 410sq m farm shop development, which is due to open mid March and it will also feature a delicatessen, cheese counter, charcuterie and a wide range of carefully sourced produce from across the South East of England.

The Farm’s inaugural butchers’ shop will feature its free range, farm reared produce with great provenance, including its renowned Gloucester Old Spot pork, its grass-fed Southdown lamb and
Belted Galloway and Dexter beef. As part of this expansion the Farm will be developing its ‘farm to fork’ offering and is looking to collaborate with other like-minded farms and producers across the
Surrey Hills, who share its ethos and passion for sustainable farming. Being able to expand its offering to feature an extensive range of locally sourced meats is the next natural step for the Farm.

Creating local jobs

To support this new venture, and the continued development of its online and wholesale business, the Farm will be recruiting for at least four new roles, including a butchery manager to run this new retail unit. Hill House Farm are already actively recruiting for these roles in time for the planned opening in March

Ian Jones of Hill House Farm said: “This is an incredibly exciting addition to our ‘farm to fork’ business. We have grown our online offering considerably over the last year, building a loyal following of
customers who love our farm reared pork, lamb and beef. Opening our shop is the next step in our expansion programme and we are really looking forward to working with Jolyon and the team at
Chessington, to introduce our great tasting products with fantastic provenance to a whole new set of customers in the Centre’s development.”

Surrey Hills “Buy 1 in 5” Pledge

Supporting your local businesses with the Surrey Hills “buy 1 in 5” pledge

Surrey Hills is inviting people in Surrey to pledge their support to buy local this Christmas and help the local economy and environmental sustainability.

There are many campaigns to encourage communities to support their local businesses, however, Surrey Hills Enterprises wanted to take that support one step further.

We have created a new self-motivated pledge to encourage individuals and families in Surrey to buy at least 1 in every 5 purchases from a Surrey Hills based business this Christmas.

For inspiration and links to many outstanding local products and services, we have created a “Virtual Artisan Market Place” highlighting businesses offering gifts, crafts, food, drink, and experiences, all from businesses who have been awarded the Trade Mark Surrey Hills – a Mark of quality, sustainability, and local provenance.

By carrying out this pledge individuals and families will be creating an extensive ripple effect of benefits:-

  1. Make dreams happen – the vast majority of Surrey Hills based business are small, entrepreneurial enterprises built on passion, dedication and determination. Every new order takes them one step closer to making their dreams a reality.
  2. Improve the local economy – If every person in the Surrey Hills spent just £5 per week in their local shops and businesses, that would add approx. £9.6 m to the Surrey Hills economy
  3. Providing local jobs – 61% of all jobs in the UK are with SMEs – by supporting your local businesses you are helping to support the creating of new jobs in the Surrey Hills
  4. Take care of the environment – by buying locally you are reducing the carbon foot print of the Surrey Hills as the products are sourced and created from within a significantly reduced area
  5. Feel more a part of your community – most small business owners and their staff are passionate about their business and offer genuine heartfelt customer service.  So the experience of buying from them is likely to be far more enjoyable and really makes you feel more a part of the community.

Surrey Hills Enterprises will support those who make the pledge by continuing to highlight and signpost you to many of the extraordinary and inspiring local Surrey Hills businesses who provide high quality, local and sustainable products

Surrey Hills “Field to Fork” Royal Visit

HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO visited Surrey Hills producers and retailers to experience first-hand their ‘field to fork’ collaboration, following the path from ‘Provenance Cuts’ at Coverwood Farm, to Surrey Hills Butchers and Squires Food Hall in Frensham.

The Countess’s visit highlighted the importance of local food production, the challenges and opportunities facing farmers and food producers due to Covid-19 and the opportunities to meet the growing interest in supporting and buying locally and sustainably.

The importance and popularity of locally produced food and “field to fork” tracing has never been higher – ticking all the boxes of sustainability, reduced carbon footprint, high-quality local collaboration and exceptional taste.

The royal visit began at Coverwood Farm near Peaslake where Her Royal Highness met Bill Biddell, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Surrey and farmer Tim Metson, his family and staff who produce pasture-fed beef.

Mr Metson spoke about the key challenges and opportunities faced by farmers as a result of the Covid-19 crisis and other issues facing farmers, including pasture-fed meat production.

HRH The Countess of Wessex officially opened the farm’s new ‘Provenance Cuts’ building, a new facility purpose built to process and butcher locally farmed, sustainable meat. Refreshments were served from the farm’s ‘airstream’ van, The Fillet and Bean, used to support villages with food and drink during the lock-down.

HRH The Countess of Wessex continued her “field to fork” visit to the Food Hall at Squire’s Garden Centres in Frensham where she was introduced to Wendy Varcoe, Executive Director of Surrey Hills Enterprises, who explained the collaboration between Surrey Hills Members awarded the Trade Mark Surrey Hills, a Mark of local provenance, quality and sustainability.

Her Royal Highness met Sarah Squires, Chairman and Martin Breddy, Managing Director, who provided a tour around the Food Hall showcasing local produce and meeting staff who had worked throughout the lock down to provide food for the local community.

Her Royal Highness met Simon Taylor of Surrey Hills Butchers and Captain of Team GB for Butchery and specializing in high quality, ethical and locally sourced pasture fed meat. Mr Taylor spoke about the importance of collaboration with local farms such as Coverwood Farm and the need to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable and ethically sourced food.
