Visitors are invited to experience the wonder of the night sky at Dark Skies at Newlands Corner on Saturday 24 October 2026, a free community event celebrating the importance of dark skies for nature, wildlife and wellbeing.
Hosted by Surrey Hills Arts in partnership with Guildford Astronomical Society and Lockwood Studios, the event runs from 7pm to 9pm and brings together astronomy, conservation, creativity and wellbeing beneath the stars.
Visitors can enjoy telescope viewing with expert astronomers, live telescope streams and talks exploring the impact of light pollution and the importance of protecting our night skies for both people and wildlife.
The evening will also feature a range of creative activities inspired by the natural world, including:
- bat-themed poetry from Briony Hughes
- talks from local bat experts,
- moth photography displays and
- Moth X Human, an immersive sound experience created by artist and composer Ellie Wilson using moth data.
Guided “Torches Off” wellbeing walks led by The Forest Bathing Institute, will also offer attendees the chance to experience the woodland and ancient yew trees of Newlands Corner after dark, connecting with the landscape through sound, sight and atmosphere.
With hot drinks, homemade cakes and activities for all ages, the event aims to inspire local communities to value and help protect one of Surrey’s most precious natural assets: its dark skies.
Attendance is free, although donations to the Surrey Hills Nature Fund (administered by Surrey Hills Society – Registered Charity No. 1125532) are welcome. Places on the wellbeing walks are limited and must be booked in advance. To help organisers plan attendance, visitors are also encouraged to register in advance via Dark Skies at Newland Corner – Surrey Hills National Landscape.
