Funded by SWR and organised by the Hampshire, Isle of Wight and New Forest Community Rail Partnerships, the first Rail to Trail Walking Festival will take place from 6-14 April 2024. The festival will sustainably connect the railways of our area to led walks around the beautiful, surrounding countryside.
Tucked in the valley Haslemere offers many splendid walks, all with a bit of a climb. But boy are they worth it!
This walk to the stunning Devils Punch Bowl is no exception. The route weaves past the Gibbet viewpoint (with its grisly history) and Walter Bailey’s impressive Xylem sculptural bench. This explores charcoal, its historical relevance to the Greensand Way and how this material has supported local individuals and industries enabling the shaping of copper, bronze, glass and iron. It is also the perfect place to enjoy the enjoy and tranquility of this setting since the re-routing of the A3.
