Love Dogs, Love Nature
Helping dog walking in the Surrey Hills stay joyful for people, pups, and nature alike.
Step out into the Surrey Hills and youโll quickly see why dog walking is one of the areaโs greatest joys โ wagging tails, winding paths and fresh air thatโs good for both people and pups. This project explores how we can keep that joy thriving by celebrating the benefits of dog walking while finding positive, practical ways to care for nature and share the landscape happily with everyone.
This report outlines the findings from research undertaken into dog walking practices within the Surrey Hills National Landscape. The research was carried out by researchers from the Sustainability Innovation Hub at the University of Surreyย on behalf of the Surrey Hills National Landscape.ย The purpose of the report is to provide an overview of the literature regardingย sustainableย dog walkingย practices and present the findings from aย seriesย observations of dog walkers carried out atย fourย key sites across the Surrey Hills National Landscape.ย

The Surrey Hills is the ideal place for responsible dog owners to exercise their canine companions, but how do we define responsible dog owners and how do we encourage more of them?
With dog ownership on the rise since the pandemic, itโs important to understand these questions to reduce harmful impact dog ownership might have on the natural environment and working farmland.
Responsible dog ownership is not incompatible with preserving nature and farming, which is why Surrey Hills National Landscape has commissioned Surrey University to research and support our future strategy to ensuring both a successful outcome for nature and our canine dog loving visitors.
