Gorse Dieback on our Heathlands

Gorse is a vital component of our natural habitats, and is home to many animals including Dartford Warblers who rely on dense gorse to overwinter in the UK. There is concern that significant amounts of gorse are becoming brown and dry. The most likely cause of this, the prolonged and unusually cold weather experienced in late January and early February.

Have you noticed this problem with gorse when you’re out and about on Surrey heathlands? If so please help us to build a national picture to monitor impacts. Click here to find out more

Celebrating our night skies

A call to all to join our European friends in Switzerland for La Nuit est Belle!

On the evening of May 21st, public lighting in the City of Geneva and surrounding communities will be switched off in a show of support for our night skies. People living in Geneva and surrounding rural districts will enjoy the wonder of natural darkness lit only by the Moon and stars. They will see the sky as it was before light pollution spread litter over its beauty. In support of our European friends and in a bid to raise awareness of light pollution, Surrey-based project, Dark Skies Matter is calling on local communities and individuals right here in Surrey to join the cause and switch off external lights from sundown until midnight on May 21st.

Light pollution wastes valuable resources and contributes to climate change. It endangers human health by disrupting natural bodily cycles. It harms the well-being of our fellow-creatures and degrades biodiversity. La Nuit est Belle! is more than a celebration of beauty, heritage and the power of Nature to inspire. It is a window into a future that is necessary if we are to protect our world and the creatures in it. It is a demonstration that, unlike most other kinds of pollution, light pollution and the damage that flows from it can be reduced, literally at the ‘flick of a switch’.

La Nuit et Belle! is the brain-child of Eric Achkar, engineer and Geneva Astronomy Society President, and Pascal Moeschler, curator and biologist at the Geneva Museum of Natural History. The original 2019 event was a huge success and welcomed by residents. It reached nearly a million people in 152 communities and encompassed an area of 2,000 square kilometres. As a result, the importance of protecting the natural night is now widely recognised and reductions in light pollution are increasingly being demanded by all stakeholders.

This call for action in Surrey is led by Surrey-based project, Dark Skies Matter, and backed by a wide range of local organisations including CPRE Surrey, the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Surrey Wildlife Trust and Guildford & District RSPB.

John Evans, founder of Dark Skies Matter and astronomer comments:
“For most people living in the UK, dark skies are under threat. Because of light pollution, we are in danger of losing forever the beauty of the natural night and its power to heal and inspire – a heritage that has been ours from the earliest times. Our bodies need the restorative darkness of night as much as they need the bright light of day. But light pollution is destroying this crucial balance. It compromises our health and well-being and that of our fellow creatures. It wastes precious resources and contributes to climate change. Why are we allowing this to happen? Light pollution is litter, harmful and wasteful. It does nothing useful at all. The good news is that we can reduce light pollution by adopting well-informed lighting practice and still do all the things we need to do. There are no downsides to doing so, only upsides.

By joining with La Nuit est Belle! We can take a stance on light pollution and work together to raise awareness and understanding of its many unwanted effects, while revisiting the beauty of natural night. We hope this small act will get supported locally and build into an annual event”.

Heather Kerswell, Chair of the Surrey Hills AONB Board comments:
“La Nuit est Belle is a great way to unite with our European friends and raise awareness of the damage that light pollution causes. The best of Surrey’s dark skies are to be found in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in remote rural areas such as Leith Hill and the Devil’s Punch Bowl, a starry night sky is one of the most magical sights the countryside can offer. We call on Surrey residents to switch off their outdoor lighting on 21st May to celebrate our wonderful dark skies”.

New research shows spending time in nature has positive health benefits

A new study conducted by the Forest Bathing Institute and the University of Derby has shown positive health benefits from spending time in natural woodland. They have also shared their mindfulness tips to maximise your time in nature.

Forest Bathing, also known as ‘Shinrin-yoku’ is a mindful walk in woodland, under the canopy of the trees. In Japan and South Korea, it is a well-known public health intervention and is used to treat high blood pressure and stress.

But can it be effective in the UK, where we have different cultural values, lifestyle habits and vastly less tree cover – 11% compared with Japan’s 70%.

During 2019, The Forest Bathing Institute partnered with Dr Kirsten McEwan at the University of Derby to conduct the first ever UK scientific research study into the physiological benefits of Forest Bathing+, this ground-breaking study revealed incredibly positive results.

After 2 hours of Forest Bathing+ 88% of participants reported an average 29% reduction in anxiety. What was really striking was that 57% of participants showed an increase in their Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV is an indicator of having a good balance in the nervous system and indicates that the body is in its ‘rest and recuperative state’ or ‘parasympathetic system’ indicating good cardiovascular health.

Positive Impact of time spent under tree canopy

Summary from The Forest Bathing Institute and the University of Derby pilot UK Forest Bathing Study conducted in 2019.

The graph reveals which Forest Bathing+ sensory exercises led to the greatest increase in HRV, such as lying down under the tree canopy and being guided in sensory mindfulness, listening to the sound of running water, smelling the forest air, the mosses, lichens and leaf-litter and spending time quietly with a tree. Sharing experiences with each other as a group was also significant. For anyone wishing to maximise their Forest Bathing+ experience, these are the exercises to focus on.

So, is there a ‘correct dose’ that people should be aiming for to optimise the benefits of Forest Bathing+?

Dr Kirsten McEwan, Senior Lead Researcher from the University of Derby said; ‘Previous studies have shown that benefits (such as a boosted immune system) can last for up to one month. Our study found that by three months, some of the benefits people had reported following their Forest Bathing+ session had dwindled.

Dr McEwan continued; ‘This suggests that regular practice is needed, indeed in Japan, Dr Qing Li recommends that Forest Bathing is practised for two hours every two weeks. Depending on the quality of the woodland environment, this should provide a constant boost to the immune system.’

Gary Evans, Co-Founder Director of The Forest Bathing Institute said; ‘We encourage everyone to spend as much time as they can in nature, whether that be going for a daily walk in their local park or woodland area. We tend to suggest that people spend whatever time is available to them within their normal routine, and then perhaps extend this as their schedule allows, as they realise how much they are actually enjoying it! We have found that many people are surprised at how much better they feel after only a short period of time! That is the impact that nature has on many of us.’

Top Mindfulness Tips to maximise your time in Nature

– Slow down and breathe in the wonderful forest air, taking time to notice your surroundings.

– Notice the different types of colour green within your line of vision. Is there a colour that stands out?

– Observe the colour of any buds beginning to blossom on the trees, and flowers beginning to bloom.

– Notice the different patterns of bark on the trees around you, touch the tree, trace your fingertips on the bark, what does it feel like? Is it smooth, coarse, prickly, warm, or cold?

– Tune into the birdsong or the sound of the insects and bees at play, as they dart around pollinating any newly opened buds and flowers.

– Smell the scent of the earth and leaf litter on the forest floor, the lichens or moss around you.

– And finally, you might just want to sit under a tree and quietly contemplate, letting thoughts drift in and out.

– All of these sensory activities help your mind and body to relax and to re-charge.

If this sounds like an experience you would love to explore for yourself, then do book onto one of the Forest Bathing+ nature therapy sessions. We look forward to meeting you in one of our wonderful, woodland environments very soon.

New Career Direction?

Do you love spending time outside in nature? If you are exploring a new career direction, you might like to find out more about training to become a Forest Bathing+ Guide. Cycle Surrey Hills launches

The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP was on hand last week to launch a new network of over 80km of off-road cycling trails in South West Surrey, funded by a grant of £19,000 from the London Marathon Charitable Trust (LMCT). The aim of the project known as ‘Cycle Surrey Hills’ is to encourage residents and visitors to get active, improve fitness and experience the spectacular scenery of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Cycle Surrey Hills is broken down into five interlinking routes giving cyclists the opportunity to choose either a long distance ride or shorter loops. The Frensham, Devil’s Punchbowl, Thursley, Puttenham and Elstead loops all offer a challenging ride of varying lengths with breathtaking Surrey Hills views and points of interest along the way. The new trails are the first phase in what is hoped will become an extensive network spreading out across the entire Surrey Hills, giving cyclists the opportunity to experience a long distance route across Surrey.

Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP commented “I am delighted to launch Cycle Surrey Hills in my constituency of South West Surrey. The new routes will appeal to families as well as serious cyclists and provide a wonderful opportunity to experience the spectacular scenery of the Surrey Hills. Cycling not only provides tremendous health benefits but being outdoors in the landscape is also proven to benefit mental health. I look forward to experiencing the routes myself.”

The launch of Cycle Surrey Hills also coincides with national charity Cycling UKs Bike week (9-17 June) which encourages ‘everyday cycling for everyone’, with a core aim of getting people to give cycling a go all over the UK.

Paul Tuohy, Chief Executive of Cycling UK comments; “There’s a freedom to riding on the trails that no other type of cycling can deliver. It’s why over 90% of people who cycle off-road list the mental wellbeing benefits as just as important as the physical when out riding in the countryside.”

”Cycling UK is proud to have helped bring these new routes to light – and we look forward to working on extending the network across the whole of the Surrey Hills and along the North Downs Way.”

Funding for the project has come from the London Marathon Charitable Trust, who award grants for capital projects that inspire and increase the numbers of people regularly taking part in physical activities.

Donna Fraser, Trustee of LMCT comments; “This is a great project for us, as it makes it easier for people to be active, enjoy off road cycling and take in the natural beauty of Surrey at the same time. It is exactly the kind of project that we’re delighted to be involved in.””

Since the first Prudential RideLondon festival of cycling in 2013, organisations in Surrey have been eligible to apply for LMCT grants toward projects that inspire more people to be active. During this time, more than £2.5million has now been awarded by The Trust to more than 70 projects across Surrey.”
