Woodland Wonder
Why are our woodlands so important?
Our woodlands are vital to mitigating climate change, flood resilience, hubs of biodiversity and support our mental and physical wellbeing.
Welcome to the Surrey Hills, home to an outstanding array of woodland species and the most wooded county in England.
Woodland Habitat & Species
Woodland is important because it is one of our most complex habitats and, as such, can support more wildlife than almost any other UK habitat. Ancient woodland which has been continuously wooded since at least 1600 AD is particularly important but younger secondary woodlands and even conifer plantations can be important for nature if managed sympathetically.

Surrey Hills Conservation Volunteers
Surrey Hills Conservation Volunteers undertake conservation and access work across the Surrey Hills National Landscape, managing access and habitats for people and nature.
During the last couple of years, Conservation Volunteers have planted over 26,000 trees and just under 4.5km of hedgerow!
Surrey Choices have also been working collaboratively as Surrey Hills Conservation Volunteers to help protect the ancient yew trees with dead hedging.
