CREST Business Awards Charity Golf Day

Explorer urges collaboration at CREST Awards wildlife fundraiser

International explorer Nick Hollis – the man who has taken on the worldโ€™s most challenging feats of endurance to promote environmental responsibility praised the golfers he joined at the CREST Business Awards Charity Golf Day who raised ยฃ4,000 for Surrey Wildlife Trust.

The event on Thursday (9th May) at West Surrey Golf Club was organised by CREST โ€“ Surreyโ€™s only green business awards โ€“ supported by a cross section of local businesses who enjoyed a day at the prestigious golf course as well as the chance to learn about Nickโ€™s 721 Challenge, climbing the worldโ€™s highest summits on each of the worldโ€™s seven continents, skiing to the two poles and rowing solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Backed by The World Land Trust, Nick has put the environment at the centre of this challenge. He said the ยฃ4,000 raised for SWT was โ€œa fantastic achievementโ€ and welcomed the opportunity to be a part of CREST Business Awards first charity golf day, saying that businesses need to come together, to collaborate and influence politicians to make long term investments to combat climate change.

โ€œIf businesses are able to collaborate not just compete, they are going to be able to influence government which is fundamentally what we need. We need a policy change. If organisations come together they are going to be able to drive that change.โ€

โ€œThis event shows the value of CREST Awards programme, in bringing people and organisations together so they can see first-hand the impact of their support, decision, actions and efforts are having. In this case, they have Surrey Wildlife Trust standing in front of them to explain what theyโ€™re doing and how the money being raised is being used for the greater good of the community and the people at large.โ€

Charlie Thefaut, a spokesman for Surrey Trust said: โ€œItโ€™s an amazing result to raise ยฃ4,000! It was a fantastic day. Everything from the weather, the golf and the lunch and speeches went so well. It was incredible to hear from Nick Hollis as well.

โ€œI want to extend a huge thank you from myself and everyone at the Trust for all the effort you put into this event. The money raised will have a real impact on our mission to restore nature in Surrey.โ€

Nick, who has come close to death in a number of his missions, said that he feels very privileged to have seen and done the things he has across the world and itโ€™s made him understand how important the eco-system is to human kind in general.

โ€œThat said, Iโ€™ve come to realise that people are unable to recognise that if that system breaks down, as it is right now, that is their life support system โ€“ they go down with it. We canโ€™t separate ourselves from nature at large.

โ€œI look at the younger generation and it concerns me they are very unlikely to have the same opportunities to enjoy the planet earth in the way that I have. My motivation is to do everything I can to ensure that they have a future, quality air to breath, food to eat. That we have farmlands and oceans that maintain their biodiversity.

โ€œI want to be able to reach the end of my life and look at myself and say I was a part of the problem but I also became a part of the solution.โ€

Terry Tidbury, Co-Director of CREST Business Awards said: โ€œWhat a day! With help from our friends at Surrey Wildlife Trust and Nickโ€™s incredible talk we were able to deliver cracking day. I am so proud to have led the team and raise much needed funds. Thankyous must go to all the teams taking part and of course West Surrey Golf Club for allowing us to hold the event.โ€

CREST Business Awards, works in partnership with the Institute for Sustainability and the Centre for Environment and Sustainability, both at the University of Surrey and is a business showcase for green business as part of Surrey County Councilโ€™s Greener Futures Programme.

Berrymakers: The New Home of British Berries

Berries made Betterย

Berries are one of the UKโ€™s most patriotic fruits and with berry sales continuing to soarย  Berrymakers is here to make buying British berries easier than ever. Available to purchase from mid-June via the Berrymakers website www.berrymakers.co.uk all berries can be delivered UK wide or available now direct from local farmers markets and farm shops.

Grown across three picturesque farms located in Berkshire and Surrey, Berrymakers will specialise in selling premium punnets of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Beyond the core range, jams and honey will also be available to ensure no berry is forgotten and likewise, the all-important bees who pollinate the berry fields have their chance to shine too.

Berrymakers care as much about the people who grow their fruit as the good it does for you. Known for their dedication to their growers and pickers, their people come first proven through their 70% pickers return rate. Abreast of healthy farming practices, they have an innovative crop system, which sees strawberry crops on a tabletop system, meaning berry pickers can pick quality berries in greater volumes at a faster pace.

Berrymakers is also pioneering sustainable growing techniques which includes using water heat pumps to heat their polytunnels. This creates four times the amount of energy as electricity would to grow the berries, making it more efficient and more green.ย  And what they grow is always the best, making healthy eating an easy and tasty option.

On a mission to inspire and encourage berry enjoyment for everyone, the Berrymakers social media channel @theberrymakers will be full of berry-licious ideas, from serving suggestions to recipe inspiration it will be sure to make your mouth water.

Good for you, good for the planet and the best in class โ€“ these really are Berries made Better, meaning Berrymakers is one delivery youโ€™ll want to stay in for.

Denbies Wine Estate becomes first UK vineyard and winery to produce certified Net Zero wine

Denbies Wine Estate has become the first vineyard and winery in the UK to achieve Net Zero status to the UK Carbon Code of Conduct standard (UKCCC). Denbies joins only a handful of wine producers globally to have achieved Net Zero in wine production.

This achievement reflects Denbiesโ€™ ongoing commitment to sustainable and responsible wine production.

โ€œAs one of the founder members of Sustainable Wines of Great Britain, we are absolutely delighted that our wines are now produced with Net Zero impactโ€, commented Chris White, CEO Denbies Wine Estate. โ€œThis is another example of the UK wine industry continuing to strive for excellence in all areas of wine production. We committed to becoming Net Zero as part of a five-year plan in 2022 and are delighted to have reached that goal in under two and a half years.โ€

The Estate, which is both an agricultural business and tourist destination, totals 380 acres, which includes 265 acres under vine and surrounding woodland and sits within the Surrey Hills National Landscape.ย  As such, Denbies and its staff have taken responsibility for the wider environment and the surrounding countryside very seriously. This includes 10 acres within the vineyard left in their natural state to encourage biodiversity. ย Other actions include self-generating green energy that has been installed on the winery buildings and environmental best practice for all new capital investment.

Denbiesโ€™ latest figures, which include the bumper harvest and bottling from 2023, show that the Estate sequestered more carbon than it emitted, leaving a carbon balance of -96 tonnes of CO2e.

Denbies appointed Triage, a leading land management consultancy, to independently certify its Net Zero position and to realise their ambition to create Net Zero wine.

Triage used the UKCCC framework to measure, report and verify all Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from the wine production process, including bottling and transportation, and measure carbon sequestration from the Estateโ€™s natural capital: its vineyards, habitats and soil. The UKCCC certifies the Net Zero position, ensuring that Denbiesโ€™ wine Scope 3 emissions into the retail supply chain are zero.

UKCCC methodology and protocols align with the highest global standards including SBTI (science-based standards) and ICVCM (Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market).

Pete Wain, CPO of Triage, added, โ€œWe are delighted to use our expertise to support Denbies in playing their part in the reversal of climate change and biodiversity collapse, all whilst maintaining their primary business objective, i.e. to produce award winning, Net Zero certified wine. We have delivered a fully auditable, robust, and holistic set of baselines, and developed an ongoing carbon emissionsโ€™ reduction and sequestration plan, and we look forward to providing continued assistance on Denbiesโ€™ nature-friendly farming journey.โ€

5D Net Zero - ISO 14065:2020

Local business gains outstanding accreditation

5D Net Zero has achieved the ISO 14065:2020 Standard for Validating and Verifying Environmental Reporting

5D Net Zero is one of the first companies in the UK to achieve ISO 14065:2020 compliance for a sustainable future.

We’re thrilled to share some groundbreaking news that’s driving us towards an even greener future! At 5D Net Zero, we’re not just keeping pace with innovation; we’re setting the standard as one of the first companies to achieve compliance with the ISO 14065:2020 Standard.

What is ISO 14065:2020?

The ISO 14064:2020 Standard defines principles and requirements for organisations such as 5D Net Zero that validate and verify environmental information and greenhouse gas assertations.

What are the benefits to 5D Net Zero in being ISO 14065:2020 compliant?

What does ISO 14065:2020 mean for 5D Net Zero? It’s our seal of approval for excellence in environmental reporting. This ISO compliance ensures our reports of greenhouse gas emissions, removals, and emission reductions are more than just numbers; they’re independently verifiable and reliable insights into our customer’s net-zero journey. This standard enables businesses and organisations to confidently champion Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.

How does ISO 14065:2020 support Sustainable Development Goals?

Out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, we are actively contributing towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9 and 13. ISO 14065:2020 is about innovation, industry, and infrastructure (SDG 9). By adhering to internationally agreed specifications that uphold quality, safety, and sustainability, we’re driving progress towards a world that’s not only innovative but also sustainable and resilient.

In this crucial battle against climate change (SDG 13), ISO 14065:2020 plays a starring role. We’re part of a global effort to monitor climate change, quantify greenhouse gas emissions, and promote best practices in environmental management.

The evening provided an informal and collaborative platform for Surrey Hills businesses to meet, with delicious dishes created from local produce devised especially for the event and served by Surrey Hills Enterprises member and creative corporate and private caterer, Lavender Catering. ย Sparkling wine from the Surrey Hills were also served, as members chatted, learning more about each otherโ€™s businesses and potential opportunities to work together.

Presented by Simon Whalley, Chairman of Surrey Hills Enterprises, Vineyards of the Surrey Hills were chosen as worthy winners of this yearโ€™s Gold Trade Mark Award, announced as a highlight of the event, in recognition of the exemplary collaboration between the five vineyards (Greyfriars Vineyard, Chilworth Manor, Albury Organic Vineyard, High Clandon and Denbies Wine Estate), the level of environmental sustainability, support for and connection with the Surrey Hills and the range of experiences and activities offered to members of the public.

Speaking on behalf of Surrey Hills Enterprises, Simon Whalley congratulated the two winners:
